It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our Rotary friend Sangkoo Yun, the most recent Rotary International President Elect who only a month ago stepped down due to his battle with cancer. His loss is felt deeply across our Rotary family and far beyond.
I had the privilege of meeting SangKoo this past February at the Rotary International Assembly where incoming District Governor Elects from all over the world gather. I remember it so vividly when I stood in the buffet line with my classmate District Governor Lucy Smith and we struck up a conversation with him. In just a few minutes of sharing stories he expressed how much he hoped to come to San Diego for our multi-district conference and how he missed the days when the International Assembly was held there. Even in that brief encounter I could sense his warmth, his curiosity, and his genuine love for connection and fellowship.
That week I also listened to his inspiring speech. SangKoo spoke passionately about cultural competency and how it builds stronger communities. He challenged us not only to ask our members to serve but to truly ask, “How do people want to serve?” Those words carried so much wisdom and heart. His vision was clear, and his leadership was one of compassion and inclusion. I knew instantly, as many others did, that he was destined to inspire millions through his message and his example.
To lose such a bright light so soon is heartbreaking. Though his time with us was short his legacy will endure. He reminded us that service is more than action, it is empathy, understanding, and respect for the diverse ways people choose to give of themselves.
Let us hold SangKoo Yun, his loved ones, and all who grieve this great loss in our thoughts and prayers. May his vision continue to guide us as we honor his life through our own acts of kindness, fellowship, and service to humanity.
