The recent Rotary Multi-District Conference was held from April 24-26 at the newly opened Gaylord Resort in Chula Vista. Our club identified this event as an excellent opportunity to present Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group's (ESRAC) Lithium Battery Collection Project.
This project aimed not only to facilitate the recycling of lithium batteries but also to inform Rotarians about different battery types, highlight the advantages of recycling rechargeable lithium batteries, discuss the safe handling of e-waste and hazardous materials such as damaged batteries, and encourage the adoption of similar collection initiatives throughout the western region.
The Solana Beach Eco Rotary club had fantastic club representation at their booth with Amelie, Chris, Andrea, Dick and Jenny taking shifts. With grateful hearts, their efforts achieved their intended outcomes. Approximately 88 pounds of lithium batteries, and devices containing lithium batteries were collected for recycling by Redwood Materials. Numerous productive conversations took place with Rotarians seeking additional information, and roughly fifteen attendees expressed interest in implementing the Lithium Battery Collection Project within their own clubs. The club wishes to extend its gratitude to Sherry Yardley for her support in securing approvals, as well as to ESRAG and Redwood Materials for their guidance and logistical support.
