The 10th Annual City2Surf was held last Saturday in Del Mar.  San Diego based non-profit Hope Leadership Academy offers City2Surf, basketball and football camps as well as after school activities designed to ensure that youth from fatherless homes in underserved communities receive support, guidance and a plan to break the cycles of divorce, poverty and hopelessness.  Brett Morey, Founder of Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship and Past President of the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle has been involved for eight of the past 10 years.  According to Brett, “We simply couldn’t pull off this annual event without our amazing volunteers and friends in the surfing community.”  This year’s crew included: Big Kahuna Lifetime Member, Vince Ponce of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad Hi-Noon, Big Kahuna Jim Johnson who came down from Orange County with a few friends and Big Kahuna Brett Morey and his fiancé Karla Pieto.  Jim is the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Irvine which is another example of how this remarkable Rotary Fellowship is building relationships within the family of Rotary.  Surfers Unite now has members in 35 countries as well.  Lifetime members of Surfers Unite included: Brett Mattei, Past President of the Rotary Club of Del Mar, Lifetime member Danny Quisenberry of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad Hi-Noon and over 15 friends in the surfing community.  Uriah Mirandon of Del MarSurf Sessions generously supplied the boards, instruction and wetsuits for free.  Rotarians in D5340 should contact Uriah’s team for private surf lessons.

City2Surf had over 50 kids participate in Saturday’s event which featured beach games, crafts and of course a full day of surfing with food and fun.  Brett reminded us that these hands-on service events that reach children from the South Bay and Southeast San Diego are excellent opportunities to invite friends, family and neighbors to learn more about Rotary. In fact, you just might want to check out the Events page of Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship to volunteer for the Switchfoot BroAM on June 18 and Life Rolls On events in Santa Monica, Huntington Beach and La Jolla Shores in the weeks ahead.  You may also text “SURF” to 858-602-2532 for a link to upcoming activities or click on: www.surfersunite.org/events.
