Under a canopy of tall pines in Idyllwild, something powerful took shape over a single spring weekend.
From April 10–12, student leaders representing 57 high schools across San Diego and Imperial Counties gathered at Idyllwild Pines Camp, each arriving with their own stories, challenges, and aspirations. What they found was more than a leadership conference—it was an experience that would reshape how they saw themselves and their role in the world.
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program, made possible by the collective support of 38 Rotary Clubs in District 5340, came to life through the dedication of a vibrant community. Thirteen passionate RYLA alumni returned, not just as volunteers, but as mentors eager to pass on what they once received. Alongside them, 43 Rotarians and Rotaractors guided small “families” of students, creating spaces where strangers quickly became teammates—and often, lifelong friends.
Throughout the weekend, the energy was unmistakable. Inspiring speakers challenged students to think bigger. Honest, sometimes difficult conversations pushed them to reflect more deeply. Laughter echoed across campgrounds during team-building activities, reminding everyone that leadership can—and should—be joyful.
By the time the weekend came to a close, something had shifted. Students didn’t just leave with new skills; they left with a renewed sense of purpose. The Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” was no longer just a phrase—it had become a personal commitment. Back in their schools and communities, these young leaders are already finding ways to turn inspiration into action.
