Rotarians help clean up their neighborhood one block at a time. Scott Horst, District Environmental Sustainability Litter Cleanup Ambassador, Escondido After 5 Rotary Club & Street Stewards, is leading efforts to tackle litter pollution around the San Diego Region and beyond.
Street Stewards' mission is to keep neighborhoods and communities clean by adopting a block or joining in on group cleanups. They hope by connecting a patchwork of environmentally concerned volunteers, all communities will be enriched with a sense of pride and respect.
Individuals can adopt blocks that they clean on their own time. Each Street Steward's route is marked on a map, to visually see the progress, and gain momentum and popularity on local social media and community groups. With a brand-new website, it has become easy to join the movement. Rotarians and Clubs are invited to participate in existing group cleanups, adopt a block or become a Captain to organize group cleanups. www.streetstewards.com.
I Love A Clean San Diego also organizes their annual Creek to Bay Cleanup Day held on April 26. Many beach cleanups are also organized throughout the region by Surfrider Foundation San Diego on a regular basis. Rotarians join cleanups individually or with their club.
