For the second year in a row, the Rotary E-club of San Diego has formed a partnership with Destiny Hands International, a nonprofit organization based in San Diego, California, USA, to deliver much-needed resources to students and teachers in Liberia. This initiative focuses primarily on improving educational access by equipping schools with computer labs and digital libraries, thereby helping students in underserved areas engage with technology and information that can enrich their learning experience.
This year, the project was implemented at Foya Central High School, the largest public school in the district and the hometown of Liberia's President, Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. It was on March 17, 2025, a remarkable delivery occurred at the school, featuring an innovative educational resource known as the SmartBox. This technology, developed by Innovative Education International, merges the functionalities of a computer lab with 20 laptop computers and a digital library into one compact unit, making it a valuable addition to the educational resources available at the school.
The delivery of the SmartBox was spearheaded by Rotarian Benjamin Kettor, who serves both on the E-club and as the president and CEO of Destiny Hands. One of the standout features of the SmartBox is its ability to operate without an internet connection. This is incredibly important in regions where reliable internet access is often lacking, allowing students and educators to take full advantage of its educational materials at any time.
In addition to providing the SmartBox, representatives from Destiny Hands also took active steps to address immediate community health needs during their visit. Over 75 schoolgirls received sanitary pads, which underscores a broader commitment to not only enhancing education but also addressing essential health concerns for young female students. Such initiatives are crucial—they empower girls to attend school consistently, allowing them to continue their studies with dignity.
This project exemplifies an effective partnership involving several organizations, including Every Kid Plays Foundation, Rotary Club of La Mesa Sunrise, Compassion for African Villages, Link Aid and BETECH. The combined efforts of these groups reflect a shared commitment to improving educational opportunities for Liberian youth. This initiative aims to provide high school students with the technological skills essential for success in today’s digital world, ensuring they graduate equipped with the expertise needed for further education and their future careers.
For organizations interested in being a part of this impactful educational project, there is an open invitation for collaboration. This initiative thrives on the notion that collective efforts can lead to substantial change, encouraging clubs and groups to participate and contribute in various ways. Those looking to get involved can reach out to Rotarian Benjamin Kettor at destinyhands21@gmail.com for information on how to help.
Supported by this initiative, the aim is not just to provide technology, but to foster an environment where education can thrive. Building partnerships enhances the reach and effectiveness of these efforts, ensuring that students gain access to academic tools necessary to excel and develop critical skills that will serve them well in the future.
The significance of this work is profound. In a world increasingly connected by technology, being computer literate is essential. By supporting these educational initiatives, we’re contributing to a brighter future for students in Liberia while also laying the groundwork for sustainable development in the area. Education is one of the most effective agents of change, and through collaborative initiatives, we have the power to uplift communities and democratize educational opportunities.
Moving forward, the dedication showcased by organizations like the Rotary Eclub of San Diego Global and Destiny Hands International highlights the positive impact that compassion can have on communities. Future projects will continue to transform the educational landscape for many more students, ensuring their rights to education and growth are respected and upheld. Through collaboration and partnership, we can create lasting opportunities for students, paving the way toward a brighter future for them and their communities. Every effort, no matter how small, counts in creating meaningful change in the field of education.
