They say “Out with the Old and in with the New!”. But wait–not so fast!

The Rotary Club of Del Mar donated the nearly 14-foot-tall clock gracing the corner of 15th Street and Camino del Mar to the Village of Del Mar in 2004 in celebration of the centennial anniversary of Rotary International. The clock recently needed a remodel, which included replacing the bronze plaque from the original installation. We gifted the old plaque to our remaining charter member, Monty Woolley.

In a surprise presentation at a regular club meeting, all members were asked to stand and remain standing for as long as they had been in Rotary. First to sit were those who had been members for 5 or fewer years, then 10 years, 20 years, 30 years.  At that point only 13 were still standing. Those members were asked those to sit if they had not attained 50 years, then 60 years, then 65 years of membership. Finally, there was only one person still standing - Mr. Monty Woolley.  Monty has been a member of the Rotary Club of Del Mar since the club was chartered on May 4, 1954. That’s over 68 years!

Monte says that he joined the club when he was only 10 years OLD and while that seems a little young, many of our current members are in their 30’s and 40’s.  Monty and all members of the Rotary Club of Del Mar embody the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. Service keeps us energized.  Stop by some Thursday and visit us.  We meet at Pacifica Del Mar at noon; join us in fun and service!
