Learning to play a musical instrument is a great way to teach young people about discipline, communication and teamwork, building lifelong skills that enable success in many professions, not only a musical career.

Even though I have pursued a career in science and business, my passion for playing the cello has helped me build confidence, connections and collaboration in all spheres of life.

I’m excited to launch this year’s District Youth Instrumental Music Competition, which celebrates talented young people in our diverse community. We’re broadening participation this year to include both classical and contemporary high school aged musicians, with cash prizes for the most promising students aged under 16 as well as for best students aged 16 to 18 years.

Club competitions will take place in January and February, with up to two students per Club moving on to Instrument Category Finals in March and culminating in the Winners’ Celebration Concert on Saturday April 18th, 2026 at the Carlsbad Public Library. All Clubs are warmly invited to participate.

More details about this year’s competition are available on the District's website for this program.

Interested in participating but unsure how to proceed?  This Club Guide to Getting Started is a resource especially created for you!

I look forward to hearing from you with your comments, ideas and questions – Janet White, 2025-26 Chair, District 5350 Youth Instrumental Music Program.
