Founded in 1985 by a group of committed Rotarians, the Thousand Smiles Foundation has expanded considerably over almost forty years. Initially aimed at delivering dental and surgical care to thousands of disadvantaged children, the Foundation's services now encompass dental, surgical, audiology, ENT, and speech therapy.
Since its establishment, it is estimated that the Foundation has assisted more than 20,000 dental and 2,000 surgical patients, exceeding its initial objectives and spreading joy to numerous individuals.
The Foundation's journey started with a visit to an existing clinic in Mexicali. In 1988, the Rotary Club of Ensenada Centenario officially invited Thousand Smiles to help establish a comprehensive field surgical clinic at the Red Cross Hospital in Ensenada, Baja California. Until that point, the Board had only considered donating supplies and equipment. The clinics, initially held three times a year, included about 100 volunteers, three general surgery rooms, and three dental chairs. By 2002, the Foundation expanded its operations by acquiring a dedicated facility in Ensenada. This new facility started with eight dental chairs but lacked surgical capabilities. Consequently, surgeries were conducted at either the Ensenada General Hospital or the Ensenada Naval Hospital from then onwards.
In 2016, the journey began with the planning of a significant expansion. By 2021, they successfully added two operating rooms and enlarged our dental section. Now, the clinic features extensive dental, orthodontic, and medical services, complete with 12 dental chairs, ENT, speech therapy, and a cutting-edge audiology department.
Every successful organization has standout leaders, and for the Thousand Smiles program, those leaders are Rotarians Bob Chaffa and Kim Muslusky. They have been pivotal in the program's success. Their expertise and dedication are immeasurable and without a doubt appreciated beyond measure.
One of the key components of Thousand Smiles is the generosity of time and talent. All dental services provided by clinicians at the clinic are free of charge and the many surgeons, dentists, technicians, hygienists and dental students donate their time and talent to the cause. Rotary clubs have supported the clinic by donating equipment, proving grant funding, and hosting lunches during the quarterly clinics to volunteers and client families.
Starting as a humble clinic and growing into a fully equipped medical facility, Thousand Smiles has always depended on donations and grants for funding. The ongoing generosity of donors propels their mission forward, allowing them to provide transformative care to an increasing number of children in need. As luck would have it, this month, in conjunction with the IGFR tournament, the Foundation is proud to host a silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting the clinic. The auction, featuring a wide range of items from jewelry and home goods to unique local experiences, is open for bids until September 25th.
