From the Fallbrook Rotary Club 4/1/08

“Polio National Immunization Day in India”. Dave travelled to India in February 2007 along with a team of 30 other Rotarians to participate in the NID. It was an intensely personal experience since Dave's mother is a polio survivor. So far Dave have given this presentation at my club (Fallbrook) as well as Fallbrook Village, Bonsall, and El Cajon. As part of the presentation to Rotarians Dave gives each person present (who wishes one) a “Goodbye Polio, Thanks Rotary” bumper sticker. The presentation is 20 minutes long and encourages questions for 5 more minutes. It utilizes PowerPoint. Dave brings a laptop and projector, but needs an adequate screen provided by the facility or club.

"Earthquake Mitigation as a Way to Peace ... A new taste of Italy from an Ambassadorial Scholar"
Marco Faggella is doing research at UCSD towards his Ph.D. in Earthquake Engineering.
He brings the greeting of his home District 2120 Italy, the land of Horace's "Carpe Diem" and Pythagoras' school.
Similarly as Californians, his people have been learning how to share their gorgeous land and culture with an uncomfortable guest: the earthquakes.
His program gives his personal perspective on how modern anti-seismic technology and Rotary service together could make a difference in facing global urban earthquake risk, and successfully export the lessons that we learned in our countries as a message of peace to seismic-prone developing countries.

A Rotarian for over 30 years and with Gift of Life on the East Coast for the last 28 years. The mission of Gift of Life is to further the cause of world peace and understanding by facilitating free medical services, primarily to children suffering from life threatening heart defects regardless of race, gender, creed or national origin who would otherwise lack access to such services. Gift of Life has recently formed a partnership with the Children’s Hospital of San Diego to sponsor up to 20 children for such surgeries. It is the goal of Gift of Life International to organize a district Gift of Life committee or Foundation and to invite the participation of as many District 5340 clubs as possible. This Rotary based organization now has over 60 participating districts world wide and will save the life of its 1 10,000th child in 2007.. District Governor Philippe Lamoise is fully aware of this project and has previously asked clubs to contact Henry Ebert for further information. I have an excellent 8 minute video and am in a position to speak to clubs in the district. Please have club program chairmen get in touch with me at ebert gol@sbcglobal.net or call 1-858-456-2969 to arrange a Gift of Life program for their club.

"Thousand Smiles Foundation" has been making a difference in the lives of children in Mexico and Costa Rica since 1985. TS provides free surgery for cleft lip and palate deformities, facial repairs and dental services for underprivileged families. Professional services, medical supplies, administration and food are provided by Rotarians and concerned citizens' donations. Volunteers include surgeons, dentists, ENT doctors, nurses, lab techs and many lay Rotary members and friends. Clinics are held 4 times a year in Ensenada, Mexico, and twice a year in Costa Rica.

We have a video presentation both in Spanish and English that tells the TS story. TS Board members have spoken to several 5340 clubs: SD North, Poway, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Mid City, and National city to name a few. Please call Kim Muslusky to arrange for a TS board member to speak at your club or group. We feel that Rotarians can help a great deal in this local effort and we are on call to present interesting programs to Rotary clubs and help them fulfill our mission.
