"San Diego Bay waterfront industries and their importance to the economy of San Diego."
John Pasha gives an informative and interesting program regarding the industries that thrive on the waterfront of the San Diego Bay. One of the surprising and eye opening things that he points out is the contribution to our local economy made by existing industries compared to the contribution that would be made by hotels and other tourism related businesses if they were to replace them. He also give information on measures in place by these industries to protect the environment. Every Rotarian in Greater San Diego would benefit from hearing this presentation.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is undertaking a nationwide consumer awareness campaign to educate various groups about the issue of the Digital Television Transition, which is occurring on February 17, 2009. There are 64 million television sets that will not get TV reception after the transition from analog to digital is made, and we do not want people waking up the morning after with no television. Most people don’t even know this is happening, or what government options are available to prevent them from losing signal. Broadcasters from all over the country volunteer to go out into the community and speak about this. Several broadcasters who work for San Diego TV stations sign up to speak to Rotary Clubs in the area.

Ms. Kathleen Tucker, Vice President of KidsTalk Foundation, Inc.
She received the Channel 10 Leadership Award for her volunteer work with children in San Diego and received the American Legion Medal for Heroism as a Reserve Lt. with the San Diego County Sheriff's Dpt. In 2007 Kathleen was recognized by NBC 7/39 as an "Inspirational Superstar and Local Hero" for her work with a school for orphans in Kenya. And this is her real story...how she bought a school bus to get the children to school..she built them a grammar school and middle school..where they study from 6am to 7pm. And she is still working to house, cloth and feed these orphans, over 900 of them in this one area in Kenya. A wonderful story of caring.

The CHALLENGE CENTER founded by Bill Bodry in 1987, to fill a gap in health care for persons who have experienced a stroke, spinal cord or brain injury, MS, or countless other neurological/orthopedic conditions. They assumed then, what is now scientific fact, that the central nervous system can make recoveries of function following traumatic illness or injury.
Operating out of the old Chargers training camp in La Mesa Ca, this 5000 square foot gym provides physical therapy/fitness on a sliding fee scale to insure affordability to all who would apply. There are no hard figures on how many are living with the residual deficits of long term disability, that are assumed to be permanent. We are now armed with recent discoveries in neuroplasticity and we are challenging those assumptions, more often then not, successfully!
Bill has devoted 21 years to this cause and serves as a model for those who frequent the Challenge Center.

“Polio National Immunization Day in India”. Dave travelled to India in February 2007 along with a team of 30 other Rotarians to participate in the NID. It was an intensely personal experience since Dave's mother is a polio survivor. So far Dave have given this presentation at my club (Fallbrook) as well as Fallbrook Village, Bonsall, and El Cajon. As part of the presentation to Rotarians Dave gives each person present (who wishes one) a “Goodbye Polio, Thanks Rotary” bumper sticker. The presentation is 20 minutes long and encourages questions for 5 more minutes. It utilizes PowerPoint. Dave brings a laptop and projector, but needs an adequate screen provided by the facility or club.

"Rescuing San Diego's Children from Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation"
The trafficking and prostitution of children is an alarming problem in our communities. Recently, the FBI identified the San Diego Region as a "High Intensity Child Prostitution Area."
Authorities also report that street gangs are now recruiting children from our local schools, shopping malls and the Internet to lure them into prostitution and pornography.

In response to this growing crisis, the "Against Child Trafficking & the Prostitution of Teens In Our Neighborhoods" (ACTION) Network is charged with an urgent mission: to restore the lives of sexually exploited children and prevent child victimization through increased awareness, advocacy and collaboration in our communities. We accomplish our goals through eight committees. Our projects include work in the areas of support services, education & training, research, advocacy, outreach and child protection.

Based on his book "Going Solar: A Homeowner’s Experience," Robert has produced a presentation describing why he decided to invest in a solar system, how he determined the appropriate system size, how he found qualified installers, how he requested, received, and evaluated proposals from solar system vendors, the installation process (with color photos), how he funded the project, the rebate and tax credit that he received, and the actual electrical cost savings realized after 12 months of solar system operation. In his presentation, he describes the tangible benefits of going solar — reduced electric bills, increased home value, and less need for carbon dioxide emissions by the local utility company. He is doing his part to keep the air we breathe clean and fresh. Now he wants to share his experience with others.

Norm Orfall, from Barstow, CA gives us an interesting program on his Tioga Pass railroad car. This car was built in 1959 by Canadian National Railway for use by executives inspecting the railway and entertaining dignitaries and customers. Norm bought it in 1996 and proceeded to completely overhaul it. The car is now available for tours and is being considered by some Rotarians as a possibility for transportation to the LA Convention next year.

"Earthquake Mitigation as a Way to Peace ... A new taste of Italy from an Ambassadorial Scholar"
Marco Faggella is doing research at UCSD towards his Ph.D. in Earthquake Engineering.
He brings the greeting of his home District 2120 Italy, the land of Horace's "Carpe Diem" and Pythagoras' school.
Similarly as Californians, his people have been learning how to share their gorgeous land and culture with an uncomfortable guest: the earthquakes.
His program gives his personal perspective on how modern anti-seismic technology and Rotary service together could make a difference in facing global urban earthquake risk, and successfully export the lessons that we learned in our countries as a message of peace to seismic-prone developing countries.
