Jennifer Yeast - Volunteer doula
(childbirth assistant) program at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest.
Volunteers, all women, work with other women during their labor and
delivery. The volunteer doulas are not medically trained, but rather
are there to provide physical and emotional support to the laboring
moms. There have been a number of studies showing improved medical
and emotional outcomes for women and babies who have a doula present
at their labor. We are one of the largest hospital-based volunteer
doula programs in the country, we work with about 35 women a month,
many of whom are low income, and our services are free and offered
to any woman who comes to UCSD to have her baby.
