Norm Orfall, from Barstow, CA gives us an interesting program on his Tioga Pass railroad car. This car was built in 1959 by Canadian National Railway for use by executives inspecting the railway and entertaining dignitaries and customers. Norm bought it in 1996 and proceeded to completely overhaul it. The car is now available for tours and is being considered by some Rotarians as a possibility for transportation to the LA Convention next year.

San Diego Natural History Museum has spoken to several clubs, including Encinitas, Del Mar, Santee, and La Mesa Sunrise about our Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition and I would love to have a chance to visit again and share about our upcoming Pompeii exhibition. For information about the exhibit you can visit http://www.sdnhm.org/pompeii/ but I hope to have a chance to speak to all the clubs and encourage them to come visit A Day in Pompeii.

Dead Sea Scrolls.
Lydia Heberling has a fascinating PowerPoint on the Scrolls and the exhibition coming to the Natural History Museum.
Clubs are signing up to go as a group, and she brings great background information. Many of you who were at District Conference in Ensenada met Lydia …she is also the granddaughter of the Conference Chair and great La Mesa Rotarian, David Ballesteros.

1. The Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center offers a program on "Olaf Wieghorst, His Life and His Legacy." Olaf (1899-1988) was one of the finest of the western artists, comprising the "link" between Fredrick Remington of the 19th century, Charlie Russell of the early 20th century, and the host of exceptional western artists of the modern era. Olaf's works have been collected by Roy Rogers, Leonard Firestone, Gene Autry, Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, and Olaf's great friend, John Wayne, among many others. Four Presidents hung original Wieghorst's in the Oval Office during their terms (Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan). His "Navajo Madonna" and "Navajo" sold together for $1,000,000, known to be the first time a living western artist had ever sold any works for this 7 figure sum.
But not only was Olaf an exceptional artist, he was a wonderful, friendly, colorful character, whose days as a young Dane in Denmark, a young cavalry trooper in the US Army, a cowhand in New Mexico and Arizona, a mounted policeman in New York and a unique resident of El Cajon all make for good, but accurate, story-telling.

2. Rescue Task Force is an El Cajon-based non-profit organization with 2 inspirational callings: it responds to emergency situations around the globe to help the unfortunate victims by arranging the distribution of aid as it arrives, and it has ongoing projects in Honduras and in Afghanistan to assist the poor villagers in those countries. In its first function RTF has responded to crises in Kosovo, Afghanistan, El Salvador, the tsunami region (Tailand and Sri Lanka), Iraq, the gulf coast following Katrina, Honduras following Mitch, among others. The ongoing projects involve building medical clinics in the jungles of La Moskitia in Honduras and in building schools in the villages in Afghanistan. It's an amazing organization, conceived by Gary Becks, staffed by him and a couple of other persons, and supported by a host of volunteers and other non-profit organizations who recognize the effectiveness of RTF and want to be a part of its wonderful works.
3. The third organization is Historic Highway Route 80 that was founded late last year and is now "moving out" with projects, events, merchandising, advertising, etc. Hopefully, as the idea catches fire, we will soon have a program developed that can be presented to clubs and other groups.

If anyone is interested in arranging a program of either Wieghorst or RTF please contact me and we will do so. I can be reached at 619-861-1061 or by mail at 3992 Lago di Grata Circle, San Diego, CA 92130.

Prof. Nancy Carol Carter, USD, DIrector of the Legal Research Center and Prof. of Law at USD. Her legal specialization is American Indian Law and she has published extensively on the law and literature of the field. Carter created and maintains the Univ. of SD Native American Web site which chronicles events affecting the original inhabitants of San Diego County and documents information about local tribes. Her presentation was most informative and enlightening regarding the true background and laws regarding our Indian reservation gambling neighbors.  Contact Nancy at NCC@sandiego.edu
