The
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is undertaking a
nationwide consumer awareness campaign to educate various groups
about the issue of the Digital Television Transition, which is
occurring on February 17, 2009. There are 64 million television
sets that will not get TV reception after the transition from
analog to digital is made, and we do not want people waking up
the morning after with no television. Most people don’t even
know this is happening, or what government options are available
to prevent them from losing signal. Broadcasters from all over
the country volunteer to go out into the community and speak
about this. Several broadcasters who work for San Diego TV
stations sign up to speak to Rotary Clubs in the area.

She received the Channel 10 Leadership Award for her volunteer
work with children in San Diego and received the American Legion
Medal for Heroism as a Reserve Lt. with the San Diego County
Sheriff's Dpt. In 2007 Kathleen was recognized by NBC 7/39 as an
"Inspirational Superstar and Local Hero" for her work with a
school for orphans in Kenya. And this is her real story...how
she bought a school bus to get the children to school..she built
them a grammar school and middle school..where they study from
6am to 7pm. And she is still working to house, cloth and feed
these orphans, over 900 of them in this one area in Kenya. A
wonderful story of caring.

Joe Ciokon, USN (Ret.)
Military Affairs Liaison, Rotary District #5340
Subject(s)
Joe Ciokon, 66, is a familiar face onboard USS MIDWAY (CV 41). Not
only does Joe serve as a docent, but volunteers his busy time as
Public Affairs Officer (PAO) for the San Diego Aircraft Carrier
Museum, MIDWAY Magic. Joe, a retired Navy Command Master Chief with
over 30 years active duty, plus an additional 15 years as a civilian
GS-13 Deputy Public Affairs Officer for the Commander Naval Air
Forces at NAS North Island, brings a wealth of Naval Aviation
experience and history as a journalist and researcher. He began his
lengthy Navy career first as an apprentice jet engine mechanic, then
flying in a Navy P2V-5F NEPTUNE, as an aerial photographer,
qualifying as a plane captain, responsible for the aircraft on the
ground. Later, he found himself in journalism, editing base
newspapers, conducting Navy public relations programs and as a
television news reporter/anchor for the American Forces Radio and
Television Service (AFRTS) overseas. It was in the latter capacity
that he covered the 1968 TET Offensive in Vietnam and was wounded
during the terrorist bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut,
Lebanon, October 23, 1983. As the museum PAO, Joe escorts VIPs,
media, and Hollywood production crews, while accepting guest speaker
engagements at local community forums, such as Rotary, Kiwanis, and
Lions. For Joe, volunteering aboard MIDWAY is a natural fit. He
reflects, “it feels like I never left the service. It is a real
privilege sharing my experiences and the history of this great
warship with our guests.”
