Model United Nations Program 2012
Our District 5340 is the only one in the U.S.A. with a Rotary Model United Nations Program, started by our District's Pathways For Peace Committee seven years ago. Rotary International has a long and proud association with the U.N, with Rotarians involved in its charter, and having the highest consultative status of any nongovernmental organization. We are partners together in PolioPlus.
Clubs select teams of two high school students –you can sponsor more than one team-and one Advisor, who can be a Rotarian, teacher, or parent. Several months before the Conference , the students will be assigned countries, given three modified UN Resolutions to prepare, and will undergo a day of training in preparation, speech and debate, and what to expect at the actual conference. Advisors are also given training and advised of our District's Youth Protection Policy.
Why should Clubs sponsor a Model UN team?
Being Rotary, we deliberately recruit students from inner city schools such as Preuss, Monarch etc. in addition to more recognized high schools-and students can be from freshmen to seniors. We have inner city schools wanting to participate that need your Club's sponsorship!
The Conference takes place April 14th. And 15th. At the Joan Croc Institute For Peace & Justice, USD Campus. Students and advisors will stay at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Mission Valley. This year R.I. Director Ken Boyd will be our keynote speaker-and there will be a limited no. of additional tickets for the banquet-Ken is an incredibly motivational speaker, with a huge commitment and passion for Peace and Rotary.
Cost will be the same as previous years, $ 600 per team of 2 students and 1 advisor.
