Issue 25
Dear Rotary Leaders,
That's the end of the Rotary year! Thank you all for a wonderful year.
This has been an exciting year for me, and I hope it has been for you
also. There were many people involved in the success of this year, and I
would like to mention as many as I can in this last Leadership Pathways
issue.
District Leadership
Many thanks to my Chief of
Staff Judy Gallegos who
spent an incredible amount of time in the last 2 years to help and
support me. Thanks also to Mel
Gallegos (Chief Cook and Bottle
Washer) who also helped in many ways. I got a 2 for 1 deal for
my Chief of Staff.
Thank you to Dale Bailey,
District Administrator and Trainer,
and District Rotarian of the Year in 2006-07. Dale is the continuity
throughout the years at the district office, and there are many ongoing
tasks that would not be done without him.
Thank you to Sergeant-At-Arms
Bill Jenkin, and to
Joe Mintz for stepping in early when
Bill had to move out. The Sergeant-At-Arms is critical to make sure all
District events are setup properly, and he works long hours before and
after each event.
Assistant Governors
Thank you to Chief Assistant
Governor Russ Hanthorn for
keeping our 20 AGs on track. The Assistant Governors provided support to
the clubs to make all the necessary preparations for the year, with goals
and planning, and reports like the Memo of Club Visits. I believe being
in charge of only 3 clubs helped the AGs to visit their clubs more often.
Thank you to the Assistant Governors
David Ballesteros, Neil Black, Chris Chase,
Maureen Eberle, John Forst, Bob Franz, Clara Harris, Bob James Sr., Ed
Knight, Yvonne Garrett, Pete Griffith, Jim Likes, Carl Lower, Sylvana
Meeks, Jim Ponder, Ray Schmidt, Karen Stelman, Mike Stelman, Bill
Stumbaugh, and Carter Taylor.
Membership
Thanks to Mary Griffin
efforts as Membership Chair, the
District keeps growing. We created a brand new club this year! The
La Jolla New Generations club, with
27 new members (average age: 32). Thanks to special representative
Sara Miceli for taking care of the
charter of this new club. Charter Night is on August 21. You can also try
to do a makeup at this new club. See their
club page on
the district website.
The Rotary Foundation
We also have been incredibly busy with all the Rotary Foundation
programs and for our giving to The Rotary Foundation. The final numbers
are not in yet, but I know we are having a record breaking year for
Annual Giving to The Rotary Foundation. Thanks to
District Foundation Chair
Marge Cole.
We also had a great year with many Matching Grants, thanks to
District Grants Subcommittee Chair
Dan Gensler.
Wayne Cusick keeps spreading the
Paul Harris Society throughout the
world. We have 161 members in our District, and this program is now
extended to 174 Districts. David
Detwiler and Bill
Stumbaugh are doing a great job with our
Alumni Association, that was
officially chartered by Rotary International this year as part of the
first batch of charters in the world.
Deborah Lindholm keeps spreading
Microcredit projects through our Mobilizing
Rotary for Microcredit committee in District 5340, and through
her efforts with the world-wide Rotary Action
Group for Microcredit. I should also mention MRM Committee
members Kenny Jones, Pauline Lim, Bink Cook, and
Dan Malloy.
David Ballesteros chaired the
Grants for University Teachers, and
Don Yeckel the
Ambassadorial Scholarships. We had a
great class of Ambassadorial Scholars this year. They got together very
often and participated to all the District Events.
It was another great year for the Group Study Exchange program. We had a
Medical Team exchange with East Africa. Many thanks to
District GSE Chair
Dick Stevens, and
Team Leader
Beverly Sumwalt. Beverly got to visit
the Pygmees in South-western Uganda. I am jalous! Remember to invite her
and her team to give you a club program.
Youth Service
Thank you to Youth Exchange
Chair Rob Eckert.
Paul Pierce did an incredible job
this year with Interact. So many new
Interact Clubs created. He also worked very actively on the new Youth
Abuse Prevention Policy, with Mike Stelman, Rob
Eckert, Elaine Allyn, Dale Bailey, Kevin Forrester and many
others. Elaine Allyn orchestrated
another incredible RYLA camp. Many
members in the RYLA Committee also:
Mike Metts, Jim Ponder, kevin Forrester, Paul
Pierce, Lloyd Trilling, Mike Averill, and Nancy Russian. I
should also mention Dan Malloy and
Bill Sturgeon who are heading the
efforts for the International Youth
Symphony, a summer Youth Exchange camp for young
musicians.
District Events
Thank you to Jim O'Meara for
chairing the District Assembly in
2006 (yes, that's more than a year ago!). We had a great
Foundation Seminar chaired by
Scott Peck and
Doug Clements, and a Great
Foundation Gala chaired by
Trudy Armstrong. Great food and many
drinks at the District Reception in
Copenhagen, thanks to Ole Prahm and
Jo Kirkenaer. Many great
District Council Dinners thanks to
Kathy Olsen and
Steve Hamann.
And one of the highlights of the year was certainely this great
District Conference in Ensenada,
Mexico, chaired by David Ballesteros.
A lot of committee members worked on this conference:
Everardo Aguilar, Dale Bailey, Dolores
Ballesteros, George Burrola, David Detwiler, Charles Foster, Hey-Jude
Gallegos, Mel Gallegos, Robert Gross, Tim Kelley, Joe and Pat Mintz,
Nancy Russian, and Carmen Sandoval. Many thanks also to our
great Rotary International President's
Representative, PDG Jesse
Devlyn and his wife PDG Olga
Devlyn.
Guest Speakers
We had many great programs this year, just to mention a few: RI
President-Elect Wilf Wilkinson, RI
Director Jerry Hall, PDG
Jesse Devlyn, PDG
Brad Howard, Master Sommelier
Eddie Osterland, etc.
Other Committees
Thank you to Nancy Russian
for being Public Relations Chair. We
had plenty of exposure in the press for the clubs and the district this
year, and I am sure we will have even more next year. Thank you to
District Secretary Dave Breeding for the best leadership meetings we had
in many years. Thank you to Ron Beaubien, Mike
Stelman, and Jim Hughes for serving on the
District Finance Committee with
Treasurer
Scott Peck. Thank you to
Immediate Past District Governor
Bob Watson for his efforts with
Rotarians At Work day (with co-Chair
Jim Roth), and for serving as chair
of the Nomination Committee. Thank
you to Dan Brenner for continuing to
maintain the Speakers Bureau pages on
the District Website. Thank you to Mel
Gallegos for stepping in to chair the
4-Way-Test Speech Contest. And
Bob Griffin did a great job with the
Scouting Committee. Great
participation also for the Peace
Committee, chaired by Mike
Bardin and Dory
Beatrice.
Advisory Council
Thank you to all the Past District
Governors for providing support and guidance through the
Advisory Council. Thank you also to
District Governor Elect
Jim O'Meara,
District Governor Nominee
Pam Russell, and
District Governor Nominee Designate
Marge Cole who participated in many
leadership meetings to keep the continuity of leadership in the
district.
Torrey Pines Rotary Club
Thank you to all the members of my club, led in 2006-07 by
Club President
Bernard Streiff. The
Torrey Pines Rotary Club is a small
club, but very active in many respects. A lot of members were involved in
District positions, and I got great participation at District events when
I needed it.
2006-07 Club Presidents
The 2006-07 Club Presidents
are all part of the District Leadership team! Thank you for your
continuous support all year long and for the participation of your club
members to the District Events.
East Africa District Team
Another great highlight of the year for me, was this trip we did
to District 9200, East Africa, in January 2007. There were only 9 of us,
but I hope we can reach many more Rotarians through the club programs we
have given so far, and that we will keep giving in the future. This was
an incredible experience, to highlight the great work that our District
has done in Africa with many Rotary Foundation projects (Matching Grants,
3H Grants, GSE Teams, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Volunteer Service
Grants, etc.). Thanks to all the team members:
Mel and Judy Gallegos, Marge Cole, Trudy
Armstrong, Bill Stumbaugh, Jim Hughes, Chuck and Kate
DuVivier. If you have not heard about this trip yet, please
check out our
online journal on the District Website.
That's many many names in this issue of the Leardership Pathways, but
if you read through them, I hope it reminded you of all the great things
we did this year, and will keep you motivated for many years to
come.
Thank you again, and keep Leading the
Way!!!
