Rotary Foundation Seminar

We will have a new location and a new look for our Rotary Foundation Seminar on Saturday, September 12, 2009.  We will meet at the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego.  Our morning will begin with a continental breakfast at 7:30 AM and the program will begin in the theater at 8:00 AM.  After Plenary Session in the theatre, we will have three break-out sessions allowing more in-depth discussion of various Rotary Foundation areas including Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange, Grants to University Teachers, Planned Giving, and Water projects.  We will reassemble in the theater for updates on the Future Vision Pilot and Polio Eradication including a presentation by Dr. Richard Coutts.   This will be a wonderful way to learn more about the Rotary Foundation—bring a good representation from your Club so you can cover all the breakouts.  You can register at the District website: http://www.rotary5340.org/registration/seminar0909.html

October Brings a New Look in Regional Councils

At the request of Rotarians, we are moving away from the centralized District Council Dinners five times a year and beginning a new look:  Regional Council meetings—organized and planned by Regional Council Chairs and the Club Presidents in six regions in the District.   Responding to surveys of recent Club Presidents, we will kick off our Regional Councils in October to bring events closer to home, make them more affordable, and feature topics and speakers of local interest. Anyone can attend any and/or all of these meetings.  You may register on line on the District webpage for these events (http://www.rotary5340.org/registration/index.html).  Here are events planned for October.  Please contact the Regional Coordinators for more information:

Dust off your Cowboy Boots

Denim & Diamonds is coming on November 7!

Howdy partners! We are going to have a hot time at the Foundation Gala on Saturday, November 7 at the Escondido Center for the Arts.  This year’s Gala will have a Country/Western Theme - so you can dress it up or dress it down…but come to have fun!  Tickets will be $70 and include a $25 donation to PolioPlus - which will help your Club reach its PolioPlus goal for the Gates Challenge Grant this year.  Registration will be on the District Website soon including a YouTube video with more information…watch for it on our Rodeo er, ah, Rotary website soon.

Interact Expands by Five New Clubs

Since May we have formed 5 new Interact Clubs - Mira Mesa High School (La Jolla New Generations Rotary Club), St. Augustine High School (Mission Valley Rotary Club), Lincoln High School (Southeast San Diego Rotary Club),  Mar Vista High School (San Ysidro/Otay Rotary), and Steele Canyon High School (Rancho San Diego/Spring Valley  Rotary Club)

are just getting started!  These clubs have formed partly in response to the enthusiasm that RYLA students experienced at the RYLA weekend—what a great investment in our young people.  Our District has been an active participant in the Southern California/Nevada Interact Symposium and we are sending a number of students this year to the Symposium on October 17-18 at the Boy Scout Center in Orange County.  If your Club is a sponsoring Club for an Interact Club at a high school and you would like more information about the October Symposium, contact our District Interact Chair Cheryl Minshew (cminshew@cox.net).  If you would like to get a club started at a local high school Cheryl can give you a hand in doing that as well.
