Governor’s Good News

We had a great turn-out for the 100th Rotary International Convention in Birmingham, England and enjoyed two wonderful Governor’s Receptions on the “narrow” boats of the English canal system.  Here’s a photo of the group who went on the brunch cruise of the canals:

Mark your calendars now for the RI Convention in Montreal next June 20-23, 2010.  Ed Knight of the Rancho Bernardo RC will coordinate District registrations, etc. for this convention.

Welcome to our newest family member:  Miramar Rotary Club

On June 15, 2009 Rotary International issued a charter to the Miramar Rotary Club of San Diego—the newest addition to our District 5340 Family of Rotary.  The Rotary Club of Miramar will hold a gala Chartering Dinner on Friday, July 10, at 6:00 PM at the Miramar Officers Club on the Miramar Marine Air Station.  For more information on attending this dinner contact PDG Mike Stelman (mstelman@aol.com) or President Jack Harkins (Jack.R.Harkins@gmail.com) or (619-804-3200).  Our District tradition has been for each of our Rotary Clubs to support our new clubs by sending a donation to them to get them started.  This donation has generally been $1.00 per member.  Please make your check to “Miramar Rotary Club” and send to our District Office, 2247 San Diego Ave., #236, San Diego, CA 92110.  Many thanks for your support of our newest Club!!  Welcome Aboard to Miramar Rotary Club—Semper Fi!!

Our New LEAD Program—what is it and how you can get involved

District 5340’s LEAD (Leadership, Ethics, And Determination) conference promises to be another great District youth program. LEAD is a 2-day weekend leadership conference for 8th grade middle school students that will encourage students to discuss issues of ethical responsibility, improve leadership and communication skills, and develop a positive outlook on life … all while having fun and making friends.  The first LEAD conference will be held September 26-27, 2009, at Camp Palomar in San Diego County. 108 student delegates from 54 middle schools will attend, and we will need approximately 12 Rotarian Facilitators.

If your Rotary Club hasn’t yet made a commitment to participate in the LEAD program, there is still a need for financial support. We still need 15 Rotary Clubs to sponsor a middle school and 10 Rotary Clubs to sponsor a Facilitator. Please contact Paul Pierce, LEAD Chair, at 760-942-9911 or visit the LEAD website at http://www.rotary5340lead.org for information about how you and/or your Rotary Club can get involved.

Information Resources for 2009-10 Club Presidents and Secretaries

Are you aware that Club and District Support (CDS) staff serve as your primary contact at Rotary?

Rotary International staff can answer any question about Rotary as well as provide advice on club elections, constitutional matters, club traditions and customs, club operations, and RI Board policy.  Below are some important web resources to assist in leading and supporting your club in the year ahead.

Ø  Learn the names and contact information of your CDS team members by using this web link: www.rotary.org/ClubDistrictReps

Ø  Review a list of  resources for club presidents and secretaries at  www.rotary.org/pressecresources

Ø Make changes to your club’s membership records at RI, reference various Rotary Foundation reports, print your club’s SAR, pay your club's dues, and report next year's club officers using Member Access.  Full instructions, helpful suggestions and frequently asked questions (FAQ) are found at: www.Rotary.org/ElearningCenter

Ø  Find helpful club publications, audiovisuals, forms and supplies:  www.Rotary.org/ShopClubPublications

Ø  Use the Club Presidents’ Checklist, a monthly calendar for both presidents and presidents-elect, with reminders of club and district functions, as well as RI and Rotary Foundation deadlines: www.rotary.org/clubpreschecklist

Ø  Consider adopting the Club Leadership Plan - a strategic planning tool based on the best practices of actual Rotary clubs:  www.Rotary.org/ClubLeaderPlan

Rotary staff looks forward to working with you and supporting your club’s service efforts.  Be sure to contact your CDS representative whenever you need assistance.
