GSE Team Members

Beth Embry

Medical Oncology Nurse
Sponsor Club: La Jolla Golden Triangle

Beth was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in the community of El Segundo. She has one older sister who has provided ongoing support. As a young child, Beth thought she wanted to be a veterinarian. However, she was inspired by her mother who was a Registered Nurse, and grew up watching her mother help those in need. When her mother passed away, Beth knew that she wanted to become a nurse and be part of that legacy.

Beth received her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from San Diego State University. Her third semester clinical rotation had a big impact on her future. The nurses on the Medical Oncology floor were truly amazing and their knowledge and kindness inspired Beth to pursue an externship in that area of nursing care. After graduating, Beth took a position with Scripps Memorial Hospital, working as a professional in her chosen field along side those same nurses who had inspired her.

While she loves being an Oncology RN, Beth’s other passion is travelingso the perfect combination is traveling to help others. After Hurricane Katrina hit the United States coastline, Beth had the opportunity to travel and help others. She was part of the Scripps Medical Response Team that went to Houston, Texas where she helped set up Disaster Relief Centers to triage and care for the numerous survivors. She heard amazing stories and met courageous people and knew she wanted to do more. Beth is very excited to be part of the upcoming Rotary GSE experience and is thankful she was chosen to be part of the team headed for East Africa.

Amy Johnson

Public Health Microbiologist
Sponsor Club: Mission Valley

Born in a small farming community near Grand Rapids, Michigan, Amy Johnson grew up loving books and enjoying being outdoors. A few years after high school Amy moved to California and spent several years in the service industry, eventually returning to school where she discovered a great love for science. She was inspired by one of her teachers to pursue her fascination with microbiology, and possibly a career in public health. She went on to University of California, San Diego, graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology.

As a student Amy worked with the County of San Diego in the Medical Examiner’s Office in the toxicology laboratory and continued in her pursuit of a career with the Public Health Department. After graduation she trained for and passed the examination for Public Health Microbiologist and joined the San Diego County Public Health Department in 2003. She has been involved with food safety, helped validate testing for emerging diseases such as West Nile Virus, and continues to learn techniques in serology, virus isolation and molecular testing procedures.

Lois Musoke

OB/GYN Physician
Sponsor Club: Chula Vista

Lois is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist practicing in San Diego. She was born in Uganda and educated in Uganda, Kenya and in Tanzania. While studying in Tanzania she volunteered at a local hospital. This experience influenced her decision to study medicine in the hopes of returning to practice in Africa. She is one of six childrenwith two brothers living in the United Kingdom, a brother who lives in San Diego, California and a sister who lives in Riverside, California. Her father and a brother live in Uganda, and she has lots of nieces and nephews that she is very close to.

During her undergraduate studies she volunteered at a clinic in Tijuana, Mexico and more recently served as a volunteer with a group of medical professionals in Lithuania and Latvia. She is currently part of a large group practice with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego and would like to include more medical volunteer work as part of her medical practice, particularly in the developing world.

Lois enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures. She enjoys exercise, theater, concerts and spending time with friends. While she is familiar with the region, she is looking forward to returning to East Africa and working with the health professionals in the countries she will visit as part of the Rotary GSE Team this coming spring.

She has worked as a racetrack veterinarian and also as a mixed animal practitioner in northern California, and is currently working as a small animal practitioner in San Diego.

Growing up, Deidre and her brother experienced life in a military family and also as part of a large extended family unit, both of which she found to be "great experiences". Her father was a native Hawaiian, her mother was born in Florence, Italy, and travel in both the United States and abroad was exciting. Deidre currently lives in the San Diego community of Mira Mesa with a variety of pets. She enjoys her professional work in the areas of preventive and geriatric internal medicine, and believes she has the best job in the world.
