The
Flight (by Jim O'Meara)
Friday
March 21st, a team of District
5340 Rotarians, that included, PDG Bill McDade and
current Governor Larry Scott, flew out of San Diego
International Airport on their flight to Africa. This flight
was the introduction to the District’s “Wheelchairs for
Malawi" Project.
Upon
arrival we were warmly greeted at Heathrow by Rotarians:
Grahame Leon-Smith and his wife, along with incoming club
president Peter King. After a cordial reception we left
Heathrow for a tour of Windsor Castle. (Due to a long
layover.) During our travels Rotarians wore various
Rotary logos and pins and stopped and chatted with various
folks who recognized them while on this tour. One of those
we spoke to on the tour was a past “Youth Exchange
Student” from the UK and upon return to our meeting
location at Heathrow Hilton we were approached and spoke
with professor Semakula Kiwaka, Ambassador to the UN from
Uganda.
We
said good-bye to London, joined up with four more District
5340 Rotarians and ended our 2nd day of travel
and leaving together for 10 more hours, continuing our flight
to Malawi.
Arrival
(by Philippe Lamoise)
We
all arrived safely in Malawi and were greeted in the VIP
room of the airport by a group of 20 people, mostly
Rotarians from Lilongwe, but also some Orthopedic Clinical
Officers who will follow us in our journey.
In
the evening, the Rotary Club of Lilongwe organized a dinner
for us, which allowed us to get better acquainted. We are
all very thankful for the hospitality and welcome of the
Rotarians in Malawi.
