Our own Bill Taylor was featured on the KOCT public television show "Living Legacies" in December, focusing on his memories of working at Camp Pendleton. We'll watch the video and then we can ask Bill our own questions. "Living Legacies" is a favorite daily KOCT show on Channel 18, in which Tom Morrow, North County Times columnist, interviews local area folks, whom you may know, on a one-on-one basis, to get their life stories involving the World War II Era.

J. Stryker Meyer: The Secret War in Vietnam

J. Stryker Meyer, a North County Times columnist, is a former Green Beret who served two tours of duty with Special Forces, which fought covert operations in Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam during the years of the Vietnam War. Meyer has now written about his experiences in two books, "Across the Fence" (2003) and, most recently, "On the Ground."

Greyhound Adoption Center

Roberta Diakun will tell us about the Greyhound Adoption Center, one of the oldest and largest greyhound rescue groups in the United States. They have placed more than 3,000 greyhounds since their founding in 1987. They are a not-for-profit group, staffed almost entirely by volunteers.

San Diegans Against Marriage Discrimination

Our speaker will be Sid Voorakkara, who has been active in working to end marriage discrimination in California, and currently serves as co-chair of San Diegans Against Marriage Discrimination. Voorakkara previously served as a field director for the United Nations Foundation and as a communications advisor for U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt. He earned his bachelor’s degree in government from New York University. He lives with his wife, Jennette Lawrence, in San Diego.

The Life of TV Star Dennis Weaver

Vista Rotarian Howard Weaver will tell us about the life of his brother Dennis. Weaver, actor, humanitarian, and pioneer environmentalist, succumbed to complications from cancer February 24. He would have been 82 on June 4th. Born in Joplin, Missouri, Dennis starred in 9 television series, including “Gunsmoke,” for which he won an Emmy in 1959 for his portrayal of “Chester,” and “Gentle Ben” and “McCloud,” for which he earned two Emmy nominations. He also played leading roles in 40 motion pictures, including Orson Welles’ 1958 masterpiece “Touch of Evil” and the 1971 TV classic “Duel,” directed by the young Steven Spielberg. What it's Like to Win the Preakness

Our own Billy Harmatz will tell us what it's like to be a jockey in the world of horse racing. An Internet search revealed that Bill was "a contemporary of Bill Shoemaker who won several major stakes during the ’50s and ’60s. Harmatz, a scholastic gymnastics star from East Los Angeles, won the 1959 Preakness Stakes aboard Royal Orbit. He later became a successful businessman in Vista and remains nearly as fit in his 70s as during his riding years."

Scott Peck will discuss the Rotary Foundation. Scott recently completed his fifth Paul Harris Fellowship and is a Foundation benefactor. He has been a Rotarian since 1984. He has held all of the officer positions at the Escondido East Rotary Club and was president in 1996-1997. He has also been involved at the district level. Working as Annual Giving Chair for the Foundation and is also currently the district Treasurer. Scott is a partner in the CPA firm of Dunlap, Klingensmith, Dunlap & Peck in Escondido, and he lives in Rancho Bernardo.
