Yaron Brook, Ph.D., President & Executive Director of the Ayn Rand Institute - 'The Morality of War'
Sheraton East - Grande Ballroom
COD: Kobe Bogaert
America's military response to 9/11 will soon eclipse Vietnam as our longest war, ever. What went wrong? Dr. Yaron Brook traces the problem to the moral ideas shaping Washington's war policy -- so-called Just War theory -- a view fundamentally inimical to our self-defense. To achieve victory, America needs a different, truly self-interested moral outlook -- one rooted in Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy.

Dr. Eric Dinerstein - Chief Conservation Scientist - World Wildlife Fund, '2010: The Year of the Tiger'
Sheraton East - Harbor Island Ballroom
Tigers, the most popular animals on Earth, are in crisis. Dr. Dinerstein and his colleagues have shown that tigers now occupy only 7% of the historical range and 40% less area than they did ten years ago. Worse news is that the current estimates for wild tigers is approximately 3,200 from populations scattered across 13 countries. Wild tigers are a symbol and an umbrella for the biodiversity-rich habitats. If we can save tigers, we can save many other less well-known species What can we do to avoid this crisis and recover wild tigers? Dr. Dinerstein's talk will focus on a tiger stabilization and recovery program that he is co-leading with other scientists, conservationists, government agencies, and development specialists at the World Bank. In this talk, he will explain all about tiger biology, what makes them unique and so fascinating, and how a tiger recovery program can save the most spectacular and largest carnivores on the planet.

JUSTICE and SCIENCE: Trials and Triumphs of DNA Evidence
Sheraton East - Harbor Island Ballroom - Noon to 1:30 PM
George W. Clarke, Judge of the Superior Court, San Diego
Forensic DNA testing technologies have presented the criminal justice system with powerful and unique tools in the solution of crime. Small, often invisible, biological material can successfully be obtained from evidence items previously thought to be useless in criminal investigations. The creation of local, state and national databases of DNA profiles of previously-convicted offenders has similarly resulted in the solution of thousands of cases with no suspects. Of greater importance is the now-common use of DNA typing technologies to examine older cases in which inmates have frequently served lengthy terms in prisons or penitentiaries, which has resulted in the exoneration of over 200 wrongfully-convicted inmates

T. Boone Pickens
Sheraton East - Harbor Island Ballroom 1 & 2
The Pickens Plan, unveiled on July 8, 2008 by T. Boone Pickens, is a detailed solution for ending the United States’ growing dependence on foreign oil. When oil prices reached $140/barrel, America was spending about $700 billion for foreign oil, equaling the greatest transfer of wealth in human history. That figure has decreased some while oil prices have retreated, but the U.S. is still dependent on foreign nations for nearly 70 percent of its oil, representing a continuing national economic and national security threat. The plan calls for investing in power generation from domestic renewable resources such as wind and using our abundant supplies of natural gas as a transportation fuel, replacing more than one-third of our imported oil.

In her presentation, “Community Transformation Through Entrepreneurship”, Valerie will share the story of her entrepreneurial family, their business, Jacobs Engineering Group, and their journey toward resident-led community revitalization through their foundation and its sister organization, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation.
The Jacobs Family Foundation was created in 1988 by Joseph and Violet Jacobs and their daughters. Children of Lebanese immigrants, Dr. and Mrs. Jacobs founded Jacobs Engineering Group in Pasadena in 1947. When the company went public, the family chose to invest its wealth in creating opportunities for others.
This fascinating and inspiring story of how a family used their business to launch an incredible community transformation truly exemplifies Gandhi’s quote: “We must become the change we want to see.”

Richard Coutts, MD--Poliomyelitis: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?
Sheraton Harbor Island East - Harbor Island Ballroom 1 & 2
Polio is a paralytic disease that is caused by a virus. An effective injectable vaccine to the virus was first developed by Jonas Salk in 1952. Albert Sabin subsequently developed an oral vaccine in 1957. Both vaccines have been used throughout the world, resulting in a dramatic decrease in the incidence of the disease. This has been accomplished through a partnership of The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Rotary International. In 1988, when the worldwide immunization program was initiated, there were 350,00 cases of polio. In 2007, there were 1,310 cases. Eradication of this disease worldwide is tantalizingly close.

Staff Appreciation Day-Chris Van Gorder, President & CEO of Scripps Health, Speaker
Sheraton Harbor Island East- Harbor Island Ballroom 1 & 2
Scripps Health is a member of the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For. How does Fortune pick the 100 Best Companies to Work for? It partners with the Great Place to Work Institute® to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Of some 1,500 firms that were contacted, 407 companies participated in this survey. Nearly 100,000 employees at those companies responded to a 57-question survey. Most of the company's score (two-thirds) is based on the results of the survey, which is sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about the management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third of the scoring is based on the company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about demographic makeup, and pay and benefit programs, as well as a series of open-ended questions about the company's management philosophy, methods of internal communications, opportunities, compensation practices, and diversity efforts, etc.
After Fortune's evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees' faith in management, it may exclude that company from the list.
