Christopher Yanov worked with gang members for five years before starting Reality Changers with just $300 to its name. Now, less than ten years later, Reality Changers has become California's leader in scholarship awards for college-bound students.

Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect in San Diego County

Casa de Amparo has been treating and preventing child abuse and neglect in San Diego County for over 30 years. It was founded by a small group of local women concerned about domestic violence and the welfare of children. Led by an official of the Women’s Resource Center, and supported by local police, this small team pushed for a crisis nursery for children affected by or at risk of child abuse, and the nonprofit Casa de Amparo was born. Today, it offers five programs: therapeutic childcare and preschool, a supervised family visitation program, an emergency shelter, a transitional housing program for youth who have aged out of the foster care system, and counseling services available to all children and their parents. Jeffrey speaks passionately & serves as a catalyst for thousands of youth to get involved in the quest to bring clean water to those in need. During his talk he shares a couple of compelling videos on the need for clean water and brings his product with its distinctive, colorful label. He & his wife of 20 years, Linda & their 4 children live in San Diego. All are active in NIKA after spending over a month in Africa seeing what real poverty is like.

“Breaking Away from a Gang”

Manny Castro joined a gang at the age of 12 and became addicted to Meth and alcohol, but now runs the G.A.M.E.(Gang Awareness through Mentoring and Education) program at the Turning the Hearts Center, a community based non-profit organization in Chula Vista that has helped over 130 gang members. Manny presents a passionate program about how he was able to break away from gang life, and how his program tries to help at-risk teens and gang members who want to start new lives. Manny has been featured on Channel 10 news, Channel 4 San Diego Insiders, and in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Helping the Homeless and Veterans in North San Diego County

Brigantine Restaurant, Poway

There aren't enough shelters in North San Diego County to serve the over 2,000 homeless people who must sleep on the streets each night. Many of those in this desperate situation are victimes of domestic violence, families with children, day laborers, the menatally ill, veterans, seniors and youth. Since 1979, Interfaith Community Services has provided basic needs, housing, counseling, employment services, and drug and alcohol services to this growing population. Last year, alone, Interfaith helped close to 36,000 people and families in crisis. An Interfaith representative will speak about the needs of and programs for our community's homeless and veterans.

REINS (Riding Emphasizing Individual Needs and Strengths) Therapeutic Horsemanship Program a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization located in Fallbrook, CA. Our unique approach to therapy for people with disabilities uses horses as a therapy tool. We have seen paraplegic riders learn to walk, non-verbal students learn to sing and people with all sorts of disabilities overcome some of the challenges in their lives and live with a little more ease. REINS is not just a place for our students to thrive but it is also a supportive community for our special riders and their brave families, people who rarely find a place where they are the majority.

Vice Admiral Edward H. Martin, U.S. Navy (retired)

“Overcoming Adversity, Six Years as a POW and What America Means to Me”

A 1954 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Vice Admiral Martin was designated a Naval Aviator in 1955 and subsequently served in numerous carrier based squadrons in both the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. While on a combat mission over North Vietnam on July 9th 1967, he was shot down near Hanoi by a surface-to-air missile and held there as a POW for nearly six years. Following repatriation in 1973, he rapidly resumed his career assuming multiple high level positions, until retiring from active duty in June 1989. He holds many awards and decorations such as The Distinguished Service Medal (two awards); the Silver Star;and Purple Heart(two awards. Late in 1991 he returned to his home in Coronado, CA where he is a private investor and president of E.H. Martin Associates, Incorporated. In addition to the U.S. Naval Academy, Admiral Martin is a graduate of the Naval War College, the National War College, and he holds an M.S. Degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. He is married and has three adult children.

Dr. Raymond E. Ashley Ph.D., Executive Director San Diego Maritime Museum

Dr. Ashley is a long time member of the maritime community who came to his present position in 1996 following a career that includes experience in ship preservation, conservation, shipbuilding, historical scholarship, publication and teaching at the university and community college levels. He received an MA in maritime history and underwater research from East Carolina University, and a Ph.D. in the history of science and technology from Duke University. Dr. Ashley received the 1994 Lothrop Award from The American Neptune for the year’s best contribution to the field of maritime history for The Search for Longitude and is currently co-authoring a book with four other historians on the history of the American Merchant Marine.

G. Keith Dolan was born in Los Angeles and after serving in the navy attended George Pepperdine University and UCLA. His professional career has been in teaching and he has been both a middle and high school principal. Before retiring, he served as a professor at California State University, San Bernardino. He has had a lifetime interest in sports and worked as a sports writer on his high school and college newspapers.

Sports Oddities is a talk about some of the unforeseen events that have occurred during our sports history. The stories are presented in both a factual and humorous manner and are based on the book Sports Almanac-USA written by the speaker. It will be of interest to the listener whether a sports fan or not.

Meeting and Christmas Party

Rotary Club of Poway will be having their weekly meeting and Christmas Party. Starting with Lunch, short meeting. There will also be a gift exchange for all members.

We will have two Marines that will be joining us. They are: The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing from Miramar. Members are asked to bring a toy or two for: Toys for Tots.

The Poway Community is encouraged to drop off toys at the Brignatine Restaurant between 12 noon and 12:30 on December 12th.

Bolivia, Shelter Boxes and Judging Holloween Costumes

Dory Beatrice will be our Speaker.

Her program will be on Bolivia: the first part is about the service projects the're doing down there, and the second part is about the Shelter Box project for the catrastrophic flooding they had shortly after Dory had been there. It's quite a dramatic story!

Dory will be judging the Holloween Costume Contest.
The winner will receive $100 towards their Paul Harris.
