'...The New Face of Hunger'
Elk's Lodge, Windsor Road, Cardiff, CA 92007
The film entitled, “One in Seven – The New Face of Hunger,” was created by students from our local, Carlsbad High School, under a grant from the Leichtag Foundation, a cause which addresses hunger and food insecurity issues facing our population today. It is a very powerful and moving documentary, depicting the economic impact on families and individuals living in our very community. The film is under a limited viewing until copyrights and patent applications are complete. It will be promoted nationally later this year, and is already in the running for national film awards.
Please do not miss our own Queen of Philanthropic giving, Laurin Pause. I know Laurin will give a great perspective on philanthropy, with an added insight into our local community.

SDSU Water Polo
Encinitas Elk's Club
Carin Crawford is entering her 12th season at the helm of San Diego State water polo, Carin Crawford continues on her mission to establish the Aztecs as a top contender in women's collegiate water polo.
Crawford has guided the Scarlet and Black to a top-11 national finish in each of her 11 years at San Diego State. During her tenure, the Aztecs have accumulated 21 All-America awards and 20 all-MPSF honors. In addition, her players have earned 39 all-MPSF academic selections and 38 ACWPC all-academic awards.
Last season, Crawford led San Diego State to its fourth straight 20-win season, which culminated in a school-record four Aztecs earning All-America accolades. Among the four was goalkeeper Kelly Campoli, who became the first freshman to earn such honors since 2001.
A year earlier in 2008, Crawford led the Scarlet and Black to a second consecutive NCAA water polo championship tournament. The Aztecs finished in fifth place to post its second straight top-five effort. For the second year in a row, Crawford's team finished their campaign with a school record for wins with 31. In addition, Crawford earned her 200th career victory with a win over Maryland at the UCSD Triton Invitational.
Crawford guided SDSU into the national spotlight in 2007, as the team earned its first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA water polo championships. The Aztecs ended up placing fourth at the tournament and finished the campaign with a then program-record 29 victories.
Prior to water polo becoming an NCAA championship sport in 2001, the Aztecs advanced to the National Collegiate Water Polo Champion-ship in Crawford's first two seasons, finishing fifth (1999) and sixth (2000). A year later, Crawford's Aztec team took second at the postseason National Collegiate Select Tournament.
Crawford's coaching and playing experience has provided the foundation from which she has built the Aztec women's water polo program. Prior to her arrival on Montezuma Mesa, Crawford served as head coach of the San Diego Mesa College women's water polo team from 1996-98 and guided them to a berth in the 1996 SoCal Championships, while coaching two players to All-America honors during her two seasons.
As coach of the Sunset San Diego Girls water polo club, Crawford assisted in building one of the premier club programs in the nation. The Sunset Girls were perennial medalists in every age group at the National Junior Olympics Water Polo Tournament from 1996-98. As a player for the Sunset Senior Women's team, Crawford was a four-time All-American, helping her team win nine Senior National Championship titles.
While a member of the United States National Team from 1989 to 1992, Crawford participated in four U.S. Olympic Festivals, earning two gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Through her participation on the national team, she traveled to Hungary, Holland, Australia and New Zealand, accumulating international playing experience.
During her collegiate career, Crawford was a co-captain for UC San Diego and received All-America honors in 1988 and 1989. She graduated cum laude in 1989 and returned to earn her master's degree in U.S. history in 1992, while also competing on the U.S. National Team.
As a former athlete representative to USA Water Polo, Crawford has worked at the grassroots level to raise the status of women's water polo to an Olympic and NCAA championship sport. Her contributions paid off when women's water polo was included in the 2000 Olympics and was recognized as an NCAA championship sport in 2001.
A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Crawford attended Valley High School. She enjoys surfing, gardening and spending time with her husband, Jack, and two sons, Jackson and Shane. The family resides in San Diego.

Eco Life Foundation Presentation
Elks Lodge 1393 Winsor Dr. Cardiff
Director's Vision for Ecolife Foundation:
Outside the 'Circle of Light.'
"In a remote village on the Masoala Peninsula of Madagascar, I sat alone at a campfire, my bags packed in preparation for an early morning departure. After six weeks studying local flora and fauna I had progressed from an object of suspicion and distrust to a welcomed member of their community.
Singing and dancing began in the dark, and one by one the villagers brought me small farewell gifts. People who traded their carefully nurtured vanilla for used clothing, who lived in reed homes, who drank dirty brown water, who had no electricity, and who lost 20% of their children before they were 5 years old — they were bringing me gifts. Rice wrapped in a leaf, a flower, a bottle cap.
It occurred to me most of us in the developed world live inside a circle of light and warmth: our fire fueled with gifts from the darkness. We know little of where these gifts come from, or at what cost to those providing.
Cyclone Eline struck Madagascar not long after, sweeping away the community on Masoala Peninsula and many of its inhabitants. Unusual storm force, combined with poor soil management, deforestation and erosion, produced human tragedy.
It was then I finally understood, it is people who matter most. True conservation requires more than saving habitats and species — it requires improving human lives. Conservation is a tool. Used not just to protect our remarkable natural world, but every bit as importantly, to protect our human way of life.
Mine, yours, as well as millions of others.
The challenge ahead of us is to save a future for ourselves, and for our children."

Monique Marvez of 100.7 FM
Elks Lodge at 1393 Windsor Road in Cardiff
Monique Marvez is on a mission to make people laugh, and her comedy is the perfect balance of “a-ha!” and “ha-ha!”.
Monique began her comedy career in Miami, and soon started touring the country and eventually the world. This lead to her own television show for Barry Diller’s WAMI, ushering in the new millennium hosting ABC’s “Rockin’ New Year’s Eve 2000” live from South Beach, appearing on “The Montel Williams Show” numerous times as relationship expert and traveling to Iraq during wartime to entertain the troops.
Currently, she anchors her own morning drive radio show on 100.7, Jack FM and her first year on the air, San Diego magazine made her a cover girl listing her as one of the 50 People to Watch. She also has a Showtime special, Latin Divas of Comedy, a TV show in development and hopes to finish her book, “Not Skinny, Not Blond” by the Labor Day.
