District 5340 Rotary Friendship Exchange Team in Turkey
|
A team of eleven people, Rotarians and spouses, from District 5340, are in Turkey for two weeks. They are staying with local Rotarians, and being shown the local culture, having experiences that the usual tourist will not have, and making wonderful new friends in Turkey. The team consists of:
Team Leader Louise and Steve Andres, La Jolla Golden Triangle
Marge Cole, Mission Valley
Juliette Cunningham, Carlsbad Hi-Noon
Tom Harvey and Bonnie Drolet, Encinitas Coastal
Connie and Dixon Fish, Fallbrook
Tom and Cindy Goodham, La Jolla Sunrise and La Jolla
Andrew Molnar, Encinitas Coastal
In the 3 days they have been in Turkey, they seen palaces, museums, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice market, tulip gardens, a four club Rotary meeting on the Asian side of the Bosporus, whirling dervishes, and more wonderful food than could possibly be consumed. They have been on a private tour of a baklava baker who produces the baklava entirely by hand. They surprised the team with a demonstration of how thin they make the phyllo by holding it over a Rotary symbol.
The hosts in District 2420 have been wonderful, spending a great deal of time making sure that their guests are comfortable, enjoying Turkey, and getting enough to eat. And eat. And eat.

D5340 Friendship Exchange to India

The D5340 Rotary Friendship Exchange team to India has been in the country for a week. Led by team leader Louise Andres of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, the team includes Steve Andres; Cheryl Minshew of the Rancho San Diego/Spring Valley Club; Steve McNeil, husband of Susan Bleicher of the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Club; and Mike Cooper and Judith Thompson of Club 33. In that short time, we have been to a festival of lights, been dressed in Indian attire, attended a wedding, been to the Hindu funeral of a Rotarian, been on an Indian TV cooking show (long story - involves a cook in a tree), been blessed by a holy elephant, seen magnificent temples, and experienced the craziest traffic on earth. We have stayed in the wonderful homes of Rotarians in Southern India, making new lifelong friends. Next week we will go to Northern India, where we will see the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, and participate in a National Immunization Day on January 23. This has been a life altering experience, with more to come.

LEAD was attended by 17 Rotarians and 95 8th grade students from San Diego County, Imperial County, and Blythe. The students were wonderful and they learned a great deal about themselves and about coping with life's challenges. The Rotarians came home encouraged by the knowledge that we live among such promising young people. Thanks to all the Rotary Clubs that generously sponsored students to LEAD.

'Happy New (Rotary) Year'
"Bigger, Better, and Bolder"
Those who attended the 2010 Rotary International Convention in Montreal heard RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith ask Rotarians to apply "cowboy logic" and make Rotary clubs "Bigger, Better, and Bolder".
He went on to explain that the fundamental principles of cowboy logic are taking pride in your work, talking less and saying more, doing what has to be done, and remembering that some things just aren't for sale!
"I believe the way for Rotary to remain viable and vibrant in the next century is to help our clubs to be bigger, better, and bolder," Klinginsmith said. "The clubs are the life and breath of Rotary. Therefore, it is clear to me that my job is to help the district governors to help the clubs. We can do it, and we will do it, if all of us follow the simple solution of cowboy logic."
