Presidents Theme 2010-2011

After taking the stage to the tune of "California, Here I Come," RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the 2010-11 RI theme, Building Communities -- Bridging Continents, during the opening plenary session of the 2010 International Assembly . Klinginsmith said he arrived at the theme after reviewing RI themes of years past. He noticed that only a few spoke to non-Rotarians.

"As a result, I decided to search for a briefly stated theme that would fulfill two objectives: the first to explain Rotary to non-Rotarians, and the second to validate our work for Rotarians," he said. "The words I have selected to describe Rotary's current mission and to highlight our achievements are what we do best: Building Communities -- Bridging Continents. "

The president-elect described how his 50 years of Rotary experience have contributed to his focus on communities at home and abroad. For example, as a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, he studied for a year in South Africa, becoming the first student from his small town of Unionville, Missouri, USA, to study abroad.

The theme announcement is a reflection of Klinginsmith's willingness to embrace change. He encouraged district governors-elect to reexamine traditional procedures that were no longer best practices and to begin new traditions where appropriate.

Rotarian Fary Moini Receives Award for Service in Afghanistan

The Governor of Nangarhar, Gulagha Shirzai, presented an award from Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the Afghan Ministry of Education December 26 to La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club member Fary Moini. Ms. Moini gratefully accepted on the behalf of President Steve Brown and her fellow Rotarians.

The engraving on the award translates to:

"The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Leadership of the Ministry of Education appreciate your efforts and endeavors in the field of the development of Education"

Hamid Karzai

President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan

While she was in Afghanistan, Fary also arranged a seminar titled "Rights of Women in Islam" for approximately 80 female and male students from Nangarhar University and their professors. The Dean of the Sharia Law Faculty, one medical doctor and expert in Islam, three scholars in Islamic religion, and one Taliban religious leader were the speakers. The speakers tackled issues related to the rights of women in Islam of inheritance, education, responsibility, and the equality of men and women.

Fary continues to work on behalf of the children and women in Afghanistan, and we are proud of her.

Rose Parade Rotary Float

This year the Rotary Rose Parade float won the Trophy for Service Organizations and followed the Parade theme of a "Cut Above the Rest" with a float titled "Service Above the Rest." The float featured young Rotarians or Rotaractors from the Southern Seven California Districts who support the financing and construction of this float along with many Rotary Clubs and Rotarians around the US and Canada. Our own Liz Raines, Past President of the La Jolla New Generations Rotary Club represented District 5340 on the float. Liz is sitting on the top left side of the float (under the right arm of "Dr. Bear"). It is estimated that 40 million people watch the parade on TV every year, not too mention about 100,000 who attend the parade in Pasadena. The back side of the float tells the story of Polio Eradication which has been Rotary's goal since 1985. RI President John Kenny and his wife June as well as District Governors and Rotarians from around the US and Canada were in Pasadena for the Rotary Rose Parade festivities and to view the float. The Grand Marshall for the parade was Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the airline pilot who heroically ditched a crippled airliner in the Hudson River last winter.

1st LEAD - Amazing Success

Congratulations to the District Leadership, 9 Facilitators, 81 District 8th grade students, and 6 LEAD Committee members who took part in the inaugural District 5340 LEAD (Leadership, Ethics, And Determination) Conference and made it a huge success! The goal of LEAD is to encourage students to discuss issues of ethical responsibility, improve leadership and communication skills, and develop a positive outlook on life ... all while having fun and making friends. Here are a few quotes from student emails

"I remember the speech that Scott gave on the first day when everyone got to the first meeting all the way to the slide show, the ethical group, and the nature hike."

"I feel better about myself. You all are amazing and I intend on seeing you all in the future. Thank you for changing my view on life. You guys are my heroes!

"I had a lot of fun there and it was a great experience."

"I would like to go back again."

Rotarians came home encouraged by the knowledge that we live among such promising young people, and they strengthened their friendships with the other Rotarians at LEAD who share their enthusiasm about working with youth.

Much appreciation to Paul Pierce, Jr. and his team for all the dedication and work that went into this exciting program.
